Several views of the relationship between applied linguistics theory and language teaching have been suggested:
1. Teachers are down-to-earth people who don’t need the theorising of linguistics.
2. Linguistics is difficult for teachers, but simplifying linguistics results in false information that can be more of a hindrance than a help.
3. Objectives for teaching should be based on findings from applied linguistics research.
4. Different models of language are needed for different purposes, so the models of applied linguistics are not relevant to teachers.
5. Linguistic models allow teachers to make generalisations that are useful for learners.
Which of these views do you agree with?
