Teaching Gen C with 4 Cs

Postby Woravut » 18 Mar 2019 08:48

After pondering about the current educational situation in this Gen C era where contents/knowledge are accessible on the Internet, I surmise that 4 characteristics are key to students' and societies' survival in the future where Artificial Intelligence is emerging: These are Curiosity, Creativity, Critical thinking, and Compassion. These 4 traits should be fundamental to students' learning. In fact, some of these, (creative thinking and critical thinking) have been promoted by most univiersities in Thailand. However, it is not clear to what extent students have a chance to develop these characteristics, especially when they are assigned to do group work or project. Also, when it comes to assessment and evaluation, it is not clear what aspects of these characteristics are actually assessed, especially in the current system of outcome-based education.

What do you think?

If any of you are asking questions like these, you might enjoy reading "Creative Schools: The Grassroots Revolution That’s Transforming Education" by Sir Ken Robinson, published in 2015. Robinson doubles Woravut's number of C's (so it must be good, right? :)) into the 8 C's of:

  • Curiosity
  • Creativity
  • Criticism
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Compassion
  • Composure
  • Citizenship

Here is the link to the book at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Schools-Grassroots-Revolution-Transforming/dp/0670016713/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434339111&sr=8-1&keywords=Creative+Schools

Has anyone read this book? Can you share your thoughts? Or, if you all don't have time to read a whole book, you might be interested in checking out his TED talk from 2006 that was an early expression of the ideas in his book.
