Which author is your writing similar to?

When looking for something else, I found https://iwl.me/ - a website where you input some text you have written and it tells you which well-known author your writing is most similar to?

I put in a section from my new book, an article I wrote for the Bangkok Post, and part of a handout for the Linguistics course.

For the first 2, apparently I write like Arthur C. Clarke; whereas my handouts are similar to the writing of David Foster Wallace.

In the about page, it seems that it's a simple algorithm (albeit Bayesian) that looks at length of sentences, frequency of punctuation marks and other similar surface features.

Which famous author is your writing most similar to?

I put in a few old blog posts that I had written and was told that my writing is most similar to tech blogger/author Cory Doctorow. A snippet from my previous DRAL paper, on the other hand, was written in the style of H.P. Lovecraft, who "was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction, especially the subgenre known as weird fiction".

I popped one of my blogs into it, and apparently those are written in the style of Arthur C. Clarke. Clearly, the system hasn't incorporated Richard Watson Todd as a model yet, otherwise it might have said that my blogs are written in the same style as the famous book on discourse topics written by that author. Interestingly, a selection from the Applied Linguistics paper, which I consider to be quite different from my blogs in style, also shows up as Arthur C. Clarke. My last DRAL paper, too, is in this same Clarke-esque style. I read quite a few of Clarke's books as a child. I wonder if I have subliminally picked up his writing style as my default, with a continuum of more-or-less Arthur C. Clarke-y depending on my target genre.

Using the first 3 lines of the abstract to my last DRAL paper, too, and the first 3 lines of the introduction to the same paper reveal my writing is similar to Edgar Allan Poe, a famous American author, poet and literary critic in his time.
Interestingly, when I entered the first few lines of the introduction to my Discourse Analysis assignment, the answer was the same, Edgar Allan Poe. It's true I read his works a lot (and found quite interesting) for my bachelor degree as one of the compulsory courses I had to do, but, talking about the similarity of my writing to his is much of a surprise. I think I'll have to revisit his writings again!

The website is totally amazing! I used my two assignments last semester - the introduction, discussion, and conclusion parts. I was surprised when the results revealed that my writing style is a bit similar to Arthur Charles Clark, a British science fiction author, inventor, and futurist, famous for his short stories and novels.
